Hello world, it’s Monday, September 28th.
Nvidia authorized a $150 billion share repurchase program, the largest in the company’s history, signaling serious confidence from the board. TSMC is also pushing hard on 2nm, targeting 120,000 wafers per month by end of 2026, while Samsung Electro-Mechanics commits $4.4 billion to FC-BGA substrate capacity for AI accelerators.
Let’s get into it. — Austin & Vik

Nvidia Authorizes $150 Billion Share Repurchase, Largest in Company History
Nvidia authorized a $150 billion increase to its share repurchase program, the largest such authorization in the company’s history. The board’s approval adds to existing buyback capacity, giving management broad latitude to return capital to shareholders as cash generation from AI-related products has expanded sharply. Reuters reported the authorization as a record for Nvidia, framing it against the backdrop of sustained demand growth across the AI sector. No timeline for the repurchases was specified, and buyback programs of this kind allow companies to execute purchases at their discretion based on market conditions, capital needs, and regulatory considerations. The scale places Nvidia among a short list of technology companies to authorize repurchases at this magnitude in a single action.
Austin: Think about what Nvidia CAN’T do with this money. Big acquisitions are dead on arrival with regulators (see the Groq probe…) Ecosystem investments get called circular. They’re fabless… and not a cloud… so when every other door is closed, the $150B goes back to shareholders. Which is honestly a good thing.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics Commits $4.4 Billion to FC-BGA Substrate Capacity
Samsung Electro-Mechanics will invest KRW 6.78 trillion ($4.4 billion) across its Sejong, South Korea facility and a Vietnam plant to expand FC-BGA substrate production for AI accelerators. The Sejong expansion alone accounts for KRW 4.27 trillion ($3.14 billion), making it the company’s largest single domestic capital commitment on record.
FC-BGA substrates, which connect processors to printed circuit boards in high-performance computing packages, have become a chokepoint in AI server builds as demand from hyperscalers outpaces available supply. Semiconductor Engineering notes that substrate capability is increasingly application-specific, with larger body sizes, higher layer counts, and finer routing narrowing the field of qualified producers. The Vietnam allocation covers additional offshore capacity, though the precise split between the two sites hasn’t been disclosed.
Vik: Everyone’s fixated on the capacity number, but mass production doesn’t start until September 2028 - it does nothing for today’s squeeze.
Austin: That’s like the story of the entire supply chain… so much is coming online in 2028
TSMC Scales 2nm Output, Adds Five Packaging Plants Across Taiwan
TSMC plans to reach 120,000 wafers per month at its 2nm node by the end of 2026, a volume that would make N2 one of the fastest leading-edge ramps the company has executed. Five additional advanced packaging facilities are planned for Chiayi, with a separate hub taking shape in Taichung, extending a build-out driven by AI hardware demand. The packaging expansion matters because CoWoS and SoIC capacity has repeatedly constrained AI chip shipments more than wafer supply itself. Affiliate Vanguard’s joint $7.8 billion Singapore fab with NXP, announced through Singapore’s Economic Development Board, adds mature-node capacity outside Taiwan, rounding out a supply chain that now stretches from leading-edge logic through final integration.
Vik: The N2 ramp is real - tape-outs already run 4x the N3 node, so demand isn’t slowing. But more wafers hit the same wall downstream. This is all round-wafer CoWoS on the packaging side, and I don’t buy that it scales to the very large packages coming. Glass panels are the endgame, but thats a longer term story.
SK Hynix Weighs $150 Billion Solidigm IPO as HBM5 Clears TSMC Validation
SK Hynix is considering a US IPO for its Solidigm NAND unit at a valuation of up to $150 billion, according to sources cited by Reuters, a figure that sent SK Hynix’s own shares lower as investors weighed the dilutive optics of separating the business. The NAND spin-out news arrived alongside a sharply different signal from Santa Clara, where SK Hynix presented at TSMC’s Open Innovation Platform conference on October 23 and validated its HBM5 architecture in collaboration with TSMC, picking up the Partner of the Year Award for the second consecutive year. Two franchises, two very different moods on the same week.
Vik: The HBM5 validation on CoWoS is the part I’d focus on this week. SK Hynix flags that from here power and design-process co-optimization matter most - that’s the base die story. And the value there keeps sliding towards the logic designers, while the memory stack drifts back towards commodity.
Qualcomm Pushes Snapdragon Into PCs, Wearables, and Samsung Foundry
Qualcomm used Snapdragon Summit 2026 to extend its platform well past smartphones, announcing a redesigned PC architecture built with Google for agentic AI and adding 1-bit AI model support to its latest wearable Snapdragon platforms so on-device inference can run on ultra-compact hardware. The next-generation Snapdragon X takes a major performance step and opens support for Linux. Qualcomm also confirmed it is actively evaluating Samsung’s 2nm process node for future Snapdragon chips, a move that would diversify its foundry base beyond TSMC. On the connectivity side, Qualcomm says its 6G commercial roadmap is underway, with a 2029 launch target. The new Spectra ISP supports three 64MP sensors simultaneously.

Infineon Buys AI Power Specialist C2i, Samples Record 120-Amp Voltage Regulators
Infineon Technologies acquired C2i Semiconductors, a data-center power-management specialist, in a move to sharpen its position in the fast-expanding market for AI accelerator power delivery. Terms were not disclosed. The company is simultaneously sampling a new voltage regulator rated at 120 amps per phase, a figure it claims sets a current record for the category and targets the dense power requirements of AI accelerator racks. C2i’s expertise in digital control and telemetry for server power stages complements the new silicon directly. Infineon’s automotive power business, which still accounts for a large share of group revenue, is running into softer near-term demand, giving the data-center push added urgency inside the company’s product mix.
Vik: Infineon buying its way deeper into AI power. C2i’s software-defined multiphase control and smart power stages feed straight into the vertical power delivery and SIVR path they’re chasing. The question I keep coming back to is whether any of this actually takes sockets from MPS.
