In 1991, company X bought a small email program written at the University of Illinois by a staffer named Steve Dorner. He had called it Eudora, after the writer Eudora Welty, because her story "Why I Live at the P.O." is about a woman who moves into a post office, and what is email but a mailbox that follows you home? Welty, told that her name now rode on a piece of software, reportedly found the whole thing mysterious but was flattered anyway. X kept Eudora until 2018, when it handed the code to the Computer History Museum.
