Back in the early 2000s, Intel planned the future of computing around a brand-new chip design, but it ran the software people already owned poorly. A smaller rival went the other way, upgrading the chip design everyone already used so their old programs kept working, and Intel ended up adopting the rival’s approach.
Today that same rival makes chips for your PC and for cloud servers, and it also makes the chips inside both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X; so whichever side of the console war you’re on, you’re still using its chips.
